One day workshop with Kevin Scully
Sunday 9 March 2025 – 10am to 4pm – £70 (plus bring some materials – list below)
This workshop is suitable for adults.
Pastels are an ideal medium for producing atmospheric and evocative effects and during the workshop these shall be explored to the full.
This introductory workshop will concentrate on a more contemporary approach to painting landscapes in pastel, but this will be underpinned with the basic rules that govern their uses and capabilities.
We will endeavour through demonstration and individual tuition to use pastels in a more painterly way, creating lively, vibrant and colourful paintings.
All reference material will be provided.

Materials to bring
Please note that there will be some materials available for you to use free of charge if you don’t have everything.
Soft Pastels
A selection of as many soft pastels as you can muster, including some more neutral colours. These brands are particularly good:
- Unison
- Sennelier
- Schminke
- Jackson’s
- Art Spectrum
- Inscribe (economy)
Pastel Paper:
A selection of pastel papers in a range of colours, excluding white. There are many brands available, but I favour the Canson Mi-Teintes range. The paper is available in single sheets as well as pads. There are other brands available sold in pads, but these tend to contain too many light colours. Mid-tone, neutral colours are a much better basis for creating a painting.
Other Materials:
- A few pastel pencils if you have them, for drawing out the image
- Drawing board
- Paper stump or torchon
- Putty rubber
- Stiff brush for removing pastel
- Spray can of fixative
- Masking tape
- Paper towel/tissues/baby wipes
- An apron, or some old clothes
