Pen and Watercolour Wash 2025

One day workshop with Kevin Scully

Sunday 15 June 2025 – 10am to 4pm – £70 (plus bring some materials – list below)

This workshop is suitable for adults.

As well as using pen and watercolour wash in its more traditional and accepted form, you will also be shown ways in which this combination of mediums can be used to produce some more contemporary paintings.
You will be working from reference material provided by the tutor where you will be able to choose the kind of subject matter that interests you including landscapes, flowers, still life, and buildings, etc.

Suitable for all levels of experience.

Materials to bring

Here is a list of basic equipment for you to bring with you. Please adjust or amend it as necessary and include any of your favourite materials.
Note: There will be some materials available for you to use free of charge if you don’t have everything.

Paper:
Watercolour paper approx. A4/A3 in size. This can be loose sheets, or in a block or a pad. Paper weight 300 g/m2 (140 lb) Not surface. Bockingford, Arches, Fabriano, or Saunders Waterford are all excellent makes.

Paints:
‘Artists Quality’ watercolours in tubes are the best, as these allow you to mix large amounts of colour for washes. If you don’t have these, pans of colour in a watercolour box/palette will be OK, though these are more suitable for smaller paintings and sketches. Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Jackson’s, or Daniel Smith are among the best quality watercolours.

Suggested colours: This is a fairly comprehensive list for general use. You don’t need to bring all of these so just bring what you have. There will be some colours available for you to use if necessary.

  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Red
  • Permanent Rose or Magenta
  • Winsor Violet or Dioxazine Purple
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • French Ultramarine
  • Viridian Green or Phthalo Green
  • Hookers Green
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Raw Umber
  • Burnt Umber
  • Payne’s grey
  • Neutral Tint or Black

Brushes:
Preferably round, watercolour brushes in sizes 3, 8, and 10 or 12.  It’s important that these brushes are of sufficient quality and that they form a point when wet. Sables are expensive, so synthetic ones are a good substitute.

A flat 1/2″ or 1” brush for larger washes

Other Materials:

  • Small bottle of black acrylic ink, or Indian ink
  • A steel-nibbed dip pen if you have one
  • A selection of waterproof black pens in a variety of sizes: roughly 0.2, 0.5, 0.7
  • Drawing board
  • HB pencil and sharpener
  • Putty rubber
  • Masking tape
  • Paper towel or tissues
