Pastel Pencil People

One day workshop with Kevin Scully

Sunday 12 October 2025 – 10am to 4pm – £70 (plus bring some materials – list below)

This workshop is suitable for adults.

If you’ve ever wanted to draw a portrait of a family member or friend, but you don’t feel that you have the confidence of technique, then this workshop is for you!

Pastel pencils are the perfect introduction to using a variety of colour mediums – they’re easy to use, and you can produce some great artwork with just a handful of pencils.

You’ll learn how to measure facial features accurately, and create convincing skin tone and hair colours. You will be given a wide variety of tips and techniques for drawing your portrait, limiting your palette and choosing your materials.

All reference material will be provided.

See the list of materials to bring for the workshop below.

Materials to bring

Here is a list of basic equipment for you to bring with you.
Note: There will be some materials available for you to use free of charge if you don’t have everything.

Pastel Pencils
Some Pastel Pencils – as many as you can afford to buy, including a variety of colours for producing skin tones: browns, creams, pinks, reds, white, and black, and a selection of other colours that may be needed for eyes, clothing etc. There are several good brands to choose from – Faber Castell, Derwent, Stabilo Carb Othello, etc.

Pastel Paper:
A few sheets of pastel paper in mid-tone (not too light, not too dark), fairly neutral colours. Size approximately A4/A3. Canson Mi-teintes is a good brand that doesn’t have too definite a mechanical texture, but you may also choose paper from the Daler Rowney Ingres or Murano range, or Winsor & Newton Pastel Papers.

Other Materials:

  • A craft knife or scalpel
  • A sanding block, or pastel pencil sharpener
  • A putty (kneadable) rubber
  • Kitchen towel, or tissues
  • A torchon (paper stump), or cotton buds for creating a smooth blend of colours
  • A small, spray can of fixative
  • A ruler
  • A few sheets of plain photocopier paper
